Without thinking, Rose picked up her bag and turned it upside down on the cushion between them. The contents slid out in one giant heap – a couple of pens, a pink toothbrush, a condom, a mini box of tampons, a lipstick, her small wallet, an opened pack of Life Savers . . . and the brick of drugs.

Felix was oddly silent.

He leaned forward and brushed the rest of the detritus from her bag out of the way, leaving the drugs on display as if it were unearthed treasure. The expression on his face was unreadable.

Rose held her breath.

“You’re in over your head, I see.” He looked up at her. “Who?”

“Who what?” she asked.

Felix sighed and leaned back, crossing his arms. “Just say it.”

Rose swallowed her unease and met Felix’s gaze full-on. She didn’t flinch. What if he refused to help her after she told him it was Ivan? Worse yet, what if he turned her in to Ivan? What would Ivan do to her if he found out that she was trying to escape from the business?

Five Favorite Movie Scenes
by Shawnee Small

Note from Dawn: Images added by me!

It'll come as no surprise to my fans that I'm a bit of an ‘80s movie fan. I've worshipped at the altar of John Hughes and have quoted more Tim Burton movies than I'd like to admit. The ‘80s was a great era for movies, and here are my top 5 favorite movie moments:

Pretty in Pink / Duckie gets his heart broken
"His name is Blaine? Blaine? That's a major appliance . . . Cause maybe for the first time in your life I won't be there."
It was a toss-up between Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink, but the latter has always spoken to me personally. I was a bit of an outsider in high school and something about the relationship between Andie and Duckie has stayed with me. In this crucial scene in the record shop, we feel Duckie's hurt when he realizes that Andi likes one of the richies and that he never had a chance at winning her heart. His undying loyalty to her, even at the end, when he lets her go just kicks me in the gut. Every time. It should've been Duckie. It always should've been Duckie.

Lost Boys / Be one of us, Michael
One of my favorite vampire movies ever for a whole bunch of reasons not least because it stared the two Coreys and made vampires evil and cool. There are some great one-liners in this film, but my favorite scene is the railroad bridge initiation. It's the pivotal point for the film when Michael is half-turned and the dream-like quality of that scene while they hang suspended from the bridge and then the camera pans back to the etherealness of the moonlight . . . it's really nicely done. What I also like about this movie as a side note is their alternative version of turning vampires. We don't get the vampire biting the neck in this one. If you haven't seen it, you should.

Dangerous Liaisons / It's beyond my control
I seriously obsessed over this movie in college. There is something about John Malcovich to this day that makes me tingle all over and his portrayal as Vicomte de Valmont in this adaption of the 18th-century French novel Les Liaisons dangereuses by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos is simply marvelous.
But my god, the scene where he breaks with Madame Tourvel (played by Michelle Pfeiffer) still is seriously gut wrenching. The pauses in John Malcovich's “break up” speech as he fights with himself to end it . . . is just so damn perfect. Then he leaves her a weeping mess and collapses against the closed door. So brutal. And Glenn Close's performance is stellar. If you like period dramas this one is excellent, just ignore Keanu Reeves.

Beetlejuice / Day o (Banana Boat song)
At one time, Tim Burton was my spirit animal. The man could do no wrong in my book and everything he did gelled with my early goth-ness so it's no wonder that one of his films shows up in my list. And this one, my friends, is still my favorite by a long mile. I never get tired of watching it and let's face it, its totally-no-holds-barred weirdness is what makes it a cult classic to this day including the infamous "Day o" scene. I only wish that Tim Burton was still making movies like this.

Young Frankenstein / Put the Candle Back
The only 70s movie to make it onto my list, but honestly, probably in my top 3 favorite movies of all-time. I can pretty much recite the whole movie even now. There is not a bad scene or line in the entire thing, and I think it's Mel Brook's best film and far outshines Blazing Saddles. It was hard to narrow down to just one favorite scene in Young Frankenstein because there are so many, but it has to be the library scene where the Young Dr. Frankenstein (pronounced Frank en steen) and Gertrude follow the source of the mysterious music and end up playing revolving bookshelves. So good! It makes me want to go watch it even now.
Anyhow, that's my list. I hope this encourages you to go watch them!
