SynopsisWe both put love on hold until now. How long will love wait for us?

3:45 in the morning: unknown number calling.
Send the stranger on their way and go back to sleep, right? Except – his gruff voice made me think twice.
I was a small girl with big dreams. I juggled college, charity, and a job, while dodging an annoying ex. Getting to know a guy? That was way down on my list. So I had every intention of ignoring sexy Joel Thomas when he woke me up.
But he wouldn’t let me. When did texting and calling turn into feelings? We kept our identities a secret, and didn’t see each other. Yet, we fell in love.

Will our chemistry stand the test of reality?

Falling in love with a man's... voice?

Image result for pleasant gif

Leonie is working hard to make her career dreams come true. Her love life has sort of fallen to the side while she finishes her degree and prepares for her future. And then she gets a strange phone call in the early morning hours. An interesting conversation with a complete stranger, which leaves her replaying that deep voice in her head and wondering if she will ever hear from him again. And she does.

Joel didn't intend for these phone calls to turn into anything serious. Yet, he finds himself intrigued by the mysterious woman who always seems to know exactly what to say to brighten his day. And he could really use a pick-me-up after his father continues to hound him about moving back home. Somehow, the texts and phone calls turn into something deeper. A romance that neither of them want to end. But will their connection be the same in person?

This book was an easy read. And it impressed me in a few different ways. The characters were both well-developed and relatable. The dialogue was realistic and the couple's behavior was believable. The story flowed smoothly and nothing felt forced to me. It was like watching a movie playing at times, the way it all seamlessly came together. So the actual writing of the story was on point.

The plot was probably my favorite part. Yes, the heroine had a good head on her shoulders, which is something I appreciate. And our hero was both thoughtful and charming at the same time. Also, the romance was a roller coaster of sweet and steamy. But it was the whole meeting via the telephone which drew me in and made me fall in love with these two. They were already smitten before laying eyes on each other. I think that made their love story all the more real.

One thing that particularly stood out to me was the way our characters spoke to each other. This was a pair of intelligent young adults. And while there were a few silly moments, mostly when talk of sex was involved, their dialogue was pleasantly mature. If the heroine had a question for the hero, she asked it. And the other way around too. The author didn't draw things out for the sake of having conflict. One of my pet peeves in romance is when the characters just don't communicate their feelings. Thankfully, this isn't one of those stories.

In closing...
A surprisingly refreshing read! I can't wait to see what this author comes up with next. Four suns!

Book Blast: The Brotherhood of Merlin by Rory D. Nelson

About the Book:
Merlin returns to Lycenea a hero, victorious over the Visi-Gauls in a gruesome and exhaustive campaign that claimed the life of one of his men and saw the annihilation of the Visi-Gauls’ Southern Army.

Merlin’s peaceful reprieve is cut short however, as he must now find and expose the corrupt Senator who initiated the war in the first place and plots to subvert the Empire for himself. He is aided by the powerful sorceress, Morgana and Felinius, a former disgraced and condemned knight who knows the inner workings of the Brotherhood.

Merlin must also protect two of the captives he rescued during the war with the Visi-Gauls, one of whom is a boy named Dante, whose power has been prophesized to defeat Herod Antipaz, the corrupt Senator, and his deadly allies who threaten to destroy Gilleon.

Herod makes plans of his own for eliminating Dante. The boy’s problems continue to mount precipitously- for not only is he being ruthlessly hunted down by Herod’s minions, but he must also face down a brutal training program in Round Table Academy, where he faces elimination on a daily basis. Should he be eliminated, he will no longer be under the protection of Merlin and his Brotherhood and his death almost a foregone conclusion.

His only hope, his only salvation is Merlin- as is the country of Gilleon.

Five hundred years after the death of King Arthur, a sadistic tyrant of Visi-Galia, attacks unprotected and vulnerable townships in Gilleon, igniting a deadly chain of events. Because he was unfairly denied a proper chance to compete for valuable mine rights and outbid by a Councilman from Gilleon, he reasons that he can invade Gilleon's vulnerable townships and force the Council to negotiate with him.

Merlin, the lead knight in Lycenea, has foreseen just such a predicament. With the gifts of premonition, telepathy and intelligence, he and 9 of his most formidable knights go into battle against Jason and his force of nine thousand.

At stake is everything. The fate of the prisoners who are awaiting to be sold into slavery rests in the hands of the deadly knights. Specifically, two girls who were attacked in Missalia and are now orphaned, are at the mercy of the sadistic King. Will Merlin and his band of knights be able to rescue them in time?

Adele, the older sister, has plans of her own for escape. Will she prove successful or will her plans be foiled? If she is caught, what will become of her and her sister, Sylvia?
Dante, a boy from Coifen, is also now orphaned. He is the sole survivor of a brutal attack on his family. An unlikely heroine has come to his rescue- a mysterious white wolf. Unfortunately, the attack has left him blind. He and his guardian make their refuge in a remote cave. He clings desperately to the hope that God has spared him for a reason. Every night he goes to bed, he says a prayer to his talisman, the Merlin, a game piece that his father gave him before he was forced to abandon him. It was the last gift he received before all hell broke loose. Will he be rescued? Will he find a permanent haven? His fate also lies in the hands of the Merlin.

Merlin and his troupe lead the Visi-Gauls in a high stakes game of cat and mouse. Jason, though capricious, is not stupid. He uses every means at his disposal to eliminate Merlin. Who will prove the victor? Fighting a severe war of attrition, it seems at times that Jason will inevitably win; but don't count the Merlin out. He is beyond slippery. Every time it seems that Jason has the gifted knight, he is thwarted yet again.

Character Study - Dante

He once lived a peaceful existence in the quaint little town of Coifen with his mother, Sophia, his father Lucian, sister Isabella and dog Mitz. That life is abruptly shattered when his father is  exiled and the rest of the family is plunged into a fight for their life. With assassins on their trail, they are eventually cornered and forced to defend themselves, along with the aid of their neighbors.

Tragically, Dante’s mother, sister and dog are brutally killed. He barely escapes with his own life, if not for the intervention of a mysterious white wolf, whom he named Cammilia. Together, they hole up in a remote cave for months until they are finally rescued by Merlin.

Though blinded in the attack that killed his family, Dante is brought to Round Table Academy by Merlin and given the choice to enter their school as a recruit. Feeling it is the only way he can regain some control over his life and maintain a safe haven, he accepts.

As promised by his headmaster, Germanicus, the training is brutal, the academics grueling and mentally demanding. In addition, he faces elimination bouts nearly everyday. Should he fail in even one of his tests or lose an important match, he will be expelled from the school- most are. Almost fifteen hundred boys enter Academy, but only a dozen or so make it to knighthood. So the odds are not in his favor.

Yet he toils on with an indefatigable spirit and inadvertently makes a powerful enemy- Maximus, the start recruit and only son of King Menelaeus. He is everything Dante is not- over-privileged, spoiled, arrogant. He has an ingrained sense of self-entitlement and it is reinforced by his stellar performance as a recruit.

Despite this, he feels threated by Dante and makes it his mission to see that Dante is removed from the Academy- at all costs. And he is not above resorting to dirty tricks and subterfuge to achieve it.

Dante’s problems continue to mount precipitously. Not only is he in danger of being removed from the school since being targeted by Maximus, but he also faces the looming threat of the man that ordered his death. Little does he know that Herod, the man who seeks his demise and the dissolution of the Brotherhood is right under his nose. And he has put his own plans into action, leveraging the rivalry between Dante and Maximus.

Dante is resourceful, intelligent and relentless, but will it be enough to thwart the pressures that seem to be closing in on him like a coiled serpent? He has the support of his newfound companion, Cammilia and Merlin. He clings to them desperately like a raft in the middle of the ocean, but will they be enough to stop the machinations of Gilleon’s most powerful senator and his vast resources? Only time will tell.

On Monday morning, Jill overslept.

She set her alarm for seven, but it was seven thirty-five when she finally woke up. As soon as she registered the time, she flew out of bed and ran to the bathroom.

She hated being late. As much as it annoyed her when other people were late, she hated it even more when it was her.

She took a three-minute shower, grabbed an outfit that wouldn’t take any effort to pull together—a knee-length A-line dress in a vintage print—and snatched a handful of jewelry that might possibly work with it. She’d barely gotten her shoes on before she was rushing into the kitchen to get some coffee.

Michelle was at the counter with her laptop as she always was, eating cereal and working. But what surprised Jill was finding that Lucas was up too.

He didn’t have to work. He didn’t have a schedule. He could still be in bed.

But there he was, sitting at the counter with a cup of coffee, putzing on his phone. Wearing nothing but a pair of old sweatpants. His hair was mussed, he needed to shave, and he wasn’t wearing a shirt.

So the first thing Jill saw as she came into the kitchen was a whole lot of gorgeous male back and shoulders and arms.

She didn’t need to see that this morning.

She dumped her pile of jewelry on the counter as she poured herself a cup of coffee.

“Morning,” Lucas said, sounding friendly and casual.

What was he even doing up this early?

And why did he have to sound so awake? Awake and masculine. Awake and masculine and sexy.

First thing on a Monday morning.

She did her best to suppress a snarl.

“You’re running late,” Michelle said, without looking up from her laptop. “Did you oversleep?”

“I don’t want to talk about it.” Jill was trying to drink her coffee and put on her earnings, bracelets, necklace, and rings at the same time.

Lucas was watching her with laid-back interest in his green eyes.

She tried not to snarl at him again.

His eyebrows went up slightly, and she realized she must not have done a good job at the suppression.

She turned her back to him, reaching into the cupboard for a breakfast bar. She preferred to eat cereal, but she didn’t have time this morning. She kept her back to Lucas as she gulped down more of her coffee.

“You missed a button.”

She stiffened, glancing over her shoulder to verify that Lucas had been talking to her. “What?”

“You missed a button.” He gestured toward her dress. “You want me to get it?”

“I can get it,” she gritted out, contorting her arms until she could feel which button on the back of her dress was undone. Discovering it, she stretched her shoulders painfully so she could button it.

When she glanced back over at Lucas, she saw that his mouth was tilted up slightly.

He was laughing at her. Silently but definitely laughing.

She didn’t try to hide her snarl this time.

He didn’t have to be up and dressed and at work by eight in the morning. He didn’t have to sit there in her kitchen, looking smug and gorgeous and amused and irresistibly rumpled when she could barely pull it together.

What kind of malicious turn of fate had made him her roommate at all?

When she’d managed her button, she poured more coffee into her cup and took it with her, grabbing her bag on her way out as she left.

She did remember to mumble out a “See you later,” before she closed the door.

It was just the first Monday morning of Lucas living in her apartment.

It was going to be a long six months.

Right man... wrong time?

Jill is single and ready to get back on the market after a long-term relationship went south. But her first attempt at dating again leads her right into a passionate one-night-stand with a stranger. And then that same man becomes her new roommate. Oops. Lucas only wanted a one-time fling with Jill, but the more he gets to know her, the less he likes the idea of her dating someone else. He just doesn't know if he can be the man she needs and Jill won't settle for anything less than forever.

I've been in a bit of a reading rut, lately, since my maternity leave ended. I'm more stressed and busy than usual and I use my reading time to decompress. But because my time is more limited now, I think I'm less forgiving for books that don't impress me. The last few books I've read have been lacking in some way. This one was a mostly smooth and highly enjoyable read. Something I have come to expect from this author.

I was happy with our characters right away. Jill was a woman with a good head on her shoulders and admirable life goals. She knew what she wanted out of life and refused to settle for less than she deserved. I appreciate that in a heroine. And while Lucas had some serious flaws in the commitment department, he was laid-back and funny. I tend to like those traits in my heroes.

This pair had steamy chemistry and a lot of spicy love scenes. I hate that Lucas was so darn stubborn, but watching him brood in his jealousy was entertaining. I felt terrible for Jill, though. She really was stuck in a no-win situation. She found what she thought was her 'forever man' and he just wasn't ready to give her what she needed. I can relate. And it was nice to get a glimpse of a few characters from the previous series too.

There was a lot of back-and-forth in this story which I don't necessarily love to read about. Neither of our characters could make a decision. Jill couldn't decide whether she could handle having a physical relationship with Lucas. Lucas couldn't decide whether he could open up about his past and try to heal the wounds. The majority of the book was our pair in limbo, teetering this way and that way and back again. I don't mind some push and pull and while this didn't go on long enough to annoy me, it did come close.

In closing...
A fun start to a new series. Four suns!

“Yes…. I will.”

His nostrils flared ever so slightly.

“Why?” he asked, brows lowered in confusion. “Why now?”

She understood perfectly. A few days ago, she’d insisted on professional distance. Yet how could she explain it? They were high above the city, just the two of them, in a cocoon of warm July air. “Does it matter?”

“It does to me. I’d like to know why you’ve changed your mind.”

Because she wanted him, wanted him to do the same wicked things he’d done on the ship. The insides of her thighs grew slick just thinking on it. She went with a coy answer instead. “Isn’t that what women do?”

One side of his mouth kicked up. “Most women, perhaps. However, you’re not most women. There’s no one else who can begin to compare.”

SynopsisThe Zandians have taken back their planet. Now they need brides.
All human females have been assigned to mates. Yes, mates, multiple.
I've been given to three handsome males--cousins. Huge, purple and horned, they act like they want to eat me for breakfast.

After what I've been through with previous slave masters, I don't know how I'll survive this. But I have to. It's adapt or be sent off-planet, which would mean my death, considering I'm wanted for murder.

My mates cannot find out I'm not able to reproduce. I need to keep my secret, figure out a way to survive, stay focused. But when the Zandian warriors claim me, they make me forget my past and scream with pleasure.

I can't let myself fall for them.
If they learn my secret, I'll lose more than my life.
I'll lose my heart.

The Romance Review

**Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book.**

A human gets an alien mate. Then another. Oh, and another one too.

Related image

Riya has a problem. More like three of them, all handsome and coming right for her now that their king has declared open season on the women. As a newly freed slave, she won't ever experience real freedom. And the three cousin aliens who want to mate with her aren't exactly offering her freedom either. They want a submissive female to warm their beds and give them children.

But the more time she spends with them, Riya starts to highly anticipate the naughtier things they want to do to her. It's just the children part that gives her trouble since she knows she is barren. If she gives herself to these men, she worries they will toss her aside once they find out that she is useless as a breeder. Can she trust them with the truth? Or will she end up alone again in the end?

If you go into this book with certain expectations, I believe it's a very enjoyable read. I don't typically put a lot of thought into sci-fi romances because just the idea of alien mating is so far-fetched. So even if the story doesn't go according to my expectations, I still tend to enjoy them. So much that this genre has become a favorite of mine. For this reverse harem book, I think you should expect a light story with a bunch of naughty fun and not a whole lot of deep emotion.

There is also a moderate-to-high amount of BDSM in this book, mostly spanking. While I don't necessarily mind seeing this in my reading, especially if it's an erotica, there was nothing in the book's description to hint toward this sort of relationship between our heroine and her lovers. This is something I think should be known prior to going into the book because a lot of readers don't enjoy seeing the dominant/submissive relationships and would want to avoid it.

As for the plot, there actually is one, even though it's not at all heavy. I would say that this book is about 30% plot advancement, 60% sex scenes of some sort, and 10% internal dialogue, mostly from our heroine. And I felt terrible for her too. Seeing her suffering because she knew she couldn't have children and her mates desperately wanted one was hard. And when the conflict happens, I was torn in half between Riya and the men. So even without a lot of emotion in the story, I still found myself getting attached to the group.

In closing...
A really naughty menage-a-quatre, set in space! Four suns!
